F-35’s HMDS will be switching to OLEDs so that novice pilots can land onboard carriers

The F-35’s Helmet-Mounted Display System (HMDS) will be upgraded to use organic light-emitting diode (OLED) to make it easier for carrier pilots to land the jet at night.

The current helmet’s display creates a green glow that prevents pilots from picking up the landing lights on a carrier at night. This forced the service to restrict night carrier landings for the F-35C to only seasoned pilots.

Navy officials are optimistic that OLED displays will rectify the bug by allowing the pilot to dim the display.
