Raytheon announced on May 6 that it has carried out a hot fire of the rocket motor for DARPA’s Multi-Azimuth Defense Fast Intercept Round Engagement System (MAD-FIRES).
The idea is to create a “medium-caliber guided projectile that would combine the guidance, precision and accuracy generally afforded by missiles with the speed, rapid-fire capability and large ammunition capacity afforded by bullets.”
Five years ago, DARPA proved that small caliber round can be guided to its target in the EXtreme ACcuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program.
