Flying Tigers didn’t come up with the shark mouth design, they copied from the RAF

While it was the First American Volunteer Group (AVG) that made the shark mouth design famous around the world, it was the British that came up with it.

In this piece for the Air and Space Museum, Cory Graff says AVG pilot Charles Bond saw a photo of a pair of Royal Air Force (RAF) 112 Squadron’s P-40s in Egypt painted with the shark mouth and decided he all the fighters of the First Pursuit Squadron should have the same marking.

AVG commander Claire Chennault ordered that every plane in the group carry the markings instead.
