There has been a call by some to rename nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis because the late Senator was against the civil rights movements.

Shawn VanDiver, Co-Founder of the San Diego Chapter of the Truman National Security Project, said Stennis’ legacy is voting against the civil rights act, voting against desegregation.
Retired Lt. Commander Reuben Keith Green agreed with VanDiver on renaming the warship.
“Stennis was vehemently opposed to Black equality, and spent his entire career, both as a Mississippi prosecutor, judge, and state senator attempting to ensure it did not happen,” told NBC 7.
