Each company will build four satellites each and deliver them by September of 2022.
Operating from low Earth orbit, each satellite is installed with an overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) sensor with “wide field of view.”
Space Development Agency Director Derek Tournear told SpaceNews that SpaceX’s solution will be based on its Starlink bus with an OPIR sensor acquired from another supplier.
L3Harris will be using its own in-house bus and sensor.
