India has decided that it will acquire six A320 airliners from Air India to modify them into airborne early warning (AEW) platforms.

The radars supplied by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will have full 360-degrees coverage.
The previous plan was to buy two new A330 airliners for conversion. The new proposal will take between four to seven years to be completed.
