Three F-22s were scrambled after Russian bombers approach Hawaii

Three F-22s were scrambled from Hawaii on Jun. 13 and the U.S. military and the FAA were not willing to disclose the reason, now CBS has reported that the fighters were launched together with a KC-135 after Russian bombers approach the island.

North American Aerospace Defense Command F-22 fighter aircraft, supported by E-3 airborne warning and control system and KC-135 refueler aircraft, intercepted two Russian Tu-95 bombers escorted by two Su-35 fighter aircraft late Monday evening.

“The 154th Fighter Wing launched two F-22 Raptors from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam at approximately 4 p.m.,” Pacific Air Forces had said in an email. “A third was launched at approximately 5 p.m”

U.S. defense officials were quoted as saying that those bombers did not enter the Air Defense Identification Zone and thus not intercepted by the F-22s.
