CH-53K conducted first over-the-horizon heavy lift and troop transport ship-to-shore ops

In a test over the Atlantic Ocean last month, the CH-53K conducted over-the-horizon heavy lift and troop transport ship-to-shore operations for the first time from USS Iwo Jima.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (November 20, 2021) A Marine Corps CH-53K King Stallion attached to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VMX-1) conducts a 27,000 lbs. light armored vehicle (LAV-25) drop during testing and evaluation operations onboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), November 20. The CH-53K is currently undergoing initial operational test and evaluation to develop tactics, techniques, and procedures of CH-53K utilization as the Marine Corps modernizes and prepares to respond globally to emerging crises or contingencies. The heavy lift test involved lifting a 27,000 lbs. light armored vehicle from the ship to a landing zone ashore.

The King Stallion also flew approximately 220 nautical miles to put troops ashore and back to the ship.
