The U.S. Navy is replacing the E-6 with the C-130J for the TACAMO (Take Charge And Move Out) role. Collins Aerospace has been selected to do the engineering work for the airborne very low frequency communications systems.

To reach out to submerged submarines, the very low frequency communications system uses a long trailing wire to transmit messages. The cable needs to be in a vertical position in order to achieve the best results, therefore, the aircraft needs to maintain a high bank angle to keep the cable as straight as possible.
Three C-130Js will be modified and work has to be completed by 2024.
