The incident took place when the fighters were flying over the Mediterranean. The air defense system was located on the island of Crete.

Greece refuted the statement by Turkey, saying that it scrambled four F-16s to intercept the five Turkish fighters that was interfering with B-52 bombers transiting Greek airspace.
