Japan downsizing its future Aegis destroyers, putting Tomahawks on them

Japan plans to downsize the two Aegis destroyers it intends to build as replacement for the abandoned Aegis-ashore program.

The Mainichi says the new vessels will be similar in tonnage with the Maya-class destroyers. It will also fit Tomahawk cruise missiles on these new ships to give them a multi role capability.

The original plan was to build these new ships with a displacement of around 20,000 tons. Scaling down the ship’s size will make it more nimble and easier to operate alongside other Maritime Self-Defense Force warships.
