Back in July, it was reported that South Korea’s Defense Project Promotion Committee has approved a plan to buy an unspecific number of CH-47F helicopters from Boeing to replace its CH-47Ds.

On Dec. 6, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced that Seoul has been cleared to buy 18 Boeing CH-47F helicopters.

The Foreign Military Sale is expected to be worth up to $1.5 billion.

The CH-47F is a twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter made by Boeing. It is the latest version of the CH-47 Chinook, which was first introduced into service in 1962. The F variant is an upgraded version of the CH-47D, which South Korea currently deploys. The CH-47D has been in service with South Korea since the 1980s.
