Skyways Air Transportation and Martin UAV compete in unmanned logistics demo

The use of unmanned systems for logistics operations at sea was recently demonstrated by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) in collaboration with the Small Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Systems program (PMA-263) at NAS Patuxent River in Maryland.

Unmanned vehicles were used to transport cargo weighing less than 50 lbs., which accounts for 90% of Navy logistics deliveries. The demonstration is part of an effort to explore the use of unmanned systems for logistics operations in the Navy, and to develop systems that meet the specific requirements of maritime operations.

During the demonstration, industry partners Skyways Air Transportation and Martin UAV operated their unmanned systems through long-range flights, carrying a variety of objects to mimic critical supplies. Both systems successfully delivered cargo over 200 nautical miles onto a moving ship underway.
