A Black Hawk helicopter crashed in northern Alabama, killing two crew members who were part of the Tennessee National Guard. The aircraft went down on Highway 53 near the intersection of Burrell Road in Madison County during a routine training mission. The crash sparked a fire that left the helicopter a “total loss,” according to the Madison County Sheriff’s office. First responders found the helicopter “engulfed in flames” upon arrival, and given the visible extent of the damage, they determined there were no survivors.
The Tennessee National Guard confirmed that the two fatalities were Guardsmen, but they did not identify them. The Governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, expressed his sorrow and asked everyone to pray for the families of the fallen soldiers. Governor Lee described the incident as an “unspeakable grief” that has struck the whole state. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey also shared her condolences and declared that the people of Alabama stand with their neighbors in Tennessee.
The Federal Aviation Administration referred all questions to the military, and the National Guard stated that it was premature to discuss possible causes of the crash.
