The Biden administration has given the green light for a Foreign Military Sale package that will provide Japan with five E-2D Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, as well as engines, radars, navigation systems, and electronic support measures systems.
The cost of the entire package, including spare and repair parts, support equipment, training, technical documentation, and other logistics and program support, is estimated to be $1.381 billion. This announcement was made by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Mar. 7th.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has already received some of the E-2Ds that Japan ordered in two previous orders totaling 13 aircraft.
To monitor its airspace in the Ryukyu Islands, a chain of Japanese islands stretching southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force depends on the E-2D aircraft. The islands have airports with shorter runways, and only the E-2 is capable of operating from them.
