RAF to appoint first non-pilot chief in historic move

The Royal Air Force (RAF) is set to appoint an officer who has never served as a pilot as its head for the first time in its history, according to sources. Air Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, an engineer, is expected to be named as the next Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) and replace Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston, who is due to step down in the summer. This move is being considered a significant milestone as it will break an important glass ceiling. Several former RAF officers have questioned whether Air Marshal Knighton has enough operational experience, given his background.
