BAE Systems and Leonardo UK to enhance RAF Typhoon with ECRS Mk2 radar

BAE Systems and Leonardo UK have been awarded a $1 billion contract by the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) to upgrade the radar capabilities of the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets. Integrating the ECRS Mk2 radar will be a game-changer for the RAF Typhoon fleet. This state-of-the-art radar system will provide the aircraft with an unparalleled ability to detect, identify, and track multiple targets both in the air and on the ground. By equipping the Typhoon with this advanced technology, pilots will have the means to effectively suppress enemy air defenses using high-powered jamming techniques. Moreover, the ECRS Mk2 radar will enable the Typhoon to engage targets beyond the reach of potential threats, thereby significantly enhancing the aircraft’s combat effectiveness.

The successful implementation of this cutting-edge radar system on the Typhoon also presents an opportunity for the U.K. to strengthen its defense exports by offering the ECRS Mk2 to other nations operating these advanced fighter jets.

This contract will generate over 600 highly skilled positions across the country. This includes 300 jobs at Leonardo’s site in Edinburgh, 100 electronic warfare specialists at the Luton facility, and 120 engineers at BAE Systems’ Lancashire site.
