In response to the ever-increasing combatant command and national intelligence requirements in the Indo-Pacific region, the 55th Operations Group Detachment 1 has been recently established at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). The primary goal of this new detachment is to serve as a strategic launch and recovery point for RC-135V/W Rivet Joint operations and exercises within the region. This development comes as a significant step towards providing the necessary flexibility and responsiveness needed to meet the growing intelligence demands in the area.

Colonel Derek Rachel, the 55th OG commander, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative coming to fruition. The detachment’s primary focus will initially be on supporting RC-135V/W Rivet Joint operations, but it will also be available for the 55th Wing’s other 135 assets, including the RC-135S Cobra Ball, RC-135U Combat Sent, and WC-135R Constant Phoenix. With a small yet dedicated team of less than 10 active-duty personnel and a few contractors, the detachment remains in a ready status, capable of serving emerging requirements on short notice.
The permanent presence of the 55th Operations Group Detachment 1 at JBER enhances the working relationship between the base and the OG at Offutt Air Force Base. Major Kevin LaCosse, the detachment commander, highlighted the mission’s importance in providing continuous support for the entire 135 enterprise, ensuring their ability to effectively carry out critical intelligence missions. For decades, the 135 community has had a notable operational history in Alaska, with missions flown from Eielson Air Force Base and Shemya Air Force Base during the Cold War, along with multiple temporary deployments to the Last Frontier. The establishment of this detachment signifies the unwavering commitment to strengthen the 135 community’s operational capabilities in Alaska and respond effectively to emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
