Croatia takes delivery of its first Rafale fighter

In a historic ceremony at the French Air Force Base Mont-de-Marsan on October 2, 2023, the Republic of Croatia officially received the first of 12 Rafale multirole combat aircraft from the French Republic. The event marked a significant milestone in Croatia’s efforts to modernize its air force and enhance its defense capabilities.

The handover ceremony was attended by Croatia’s Defense Minister, Mario Banožić, alongside other dignitaries, including Zvonimir Frka-Petešić, Head of the Office of the Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Croatian War Veterans, Tom Medved. A delegation from the Croatian Armed Forces, led by Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces General Staff, Admiral Robert Hranj, was also present.

Defense Minister Banožić underscored the historic importance of this moment for Croatia, its Armed Forces, and the Croatian Air Force. He attributed this generational success to the commitment of President Andrej Plenković’s government, which has prioritized the modernization and strengthening of all branches of the Armed Forces from the outset.

“Today is of great significance for the Republic of Croatia, the Armed Forces, and the Croatian Air Force,” said Minister Banožić. “I want to emphasize that the modernization of the Croatian Air Force will make sure that in this part of Europe, no one will have a stronger, more modern, and more powerful air force.”

Minister Banožić expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in making this project a success, from the cooperation of French colleagues to the dedication of Croatian pilots and technicians. He thanked the French side for their unwavering support throughout the entire process.

The Minister also lauded Croatian fighter pilots who have been training in France for months on Rafale aircraft, acknowledging their exceptional skills and professionalism. He commended their dedication, professionalism, and expertise, emphasizing their pivotal role in the future of the Croatian Armed Forces.

“Thanks to every one of our pilots, thanks to every aviation technician for everything they have shown during their training in France: you are the guarantor of a bright future for the Croatian Armed Forces and an invaluable key force of our Armed Forces,” Minister Banožić concluded.

The Rafale multirole combat aircraft, a product of French manufacturer Dassault Aviation, will significantly enhance Croatia’s air defense capabilities. After the official reception ceremony in France, Croatian pilots will continue their training at the Bordeaux Training Center.
