The Georgia State Senate is gearing up to celebrate a historic milestone in aviation – the 70th anniversary of the legendary C-130 Hercules aircraft. On Jan. 17, during Georgia Aerospace Day at the Gold Dome, Lockheed Martin, the aircraft’s manufacturer, received a special resolution honoring the C-130’s enduring legacy and its deep ties to the state.

The resolution, presented by five State Senators, recognizes the C-130’s impact on Georgia’s aerospace industry. For seven decades, Lockheed’s Marietta facility has been the sole birthplace of every Hercules, making it “Georgia’s aerospace ambassador to the world,” as Rod McLean, general manager of the plant, aptly described.
The C-130’s impact transcends borders. With over 2,700 aircraft delivered to more than 70 countries, it has become a versatile workhorse, tackling diverse missions from troop and cargo transport to humanitarian aid and disaster relief. McLean emphasized the aircraft’s enduring relevance, stating, “There’s a very strong chance that we will build this airplane for the next 10 years.”
The Georgia Senate’s resolution extends beyond mere celebration. It acknowledges the crucial role the C-130 plays in securing the state’s position as a national leader in aerospace research, development, and manufacturing. “Because of your support,” McLean addressed the lawmakers, “we are able to ensure the state of Georgia remains a national leader.”
