Germany has taken a crucial step towards bolstering its air defense capabilities with the recent approval of a $1.4 billion deal to develop a new short-range system. This initiative comes amid heightened regional security concerns, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which exposed vulnerabilities in Germany’s existing defenses.
The new system aims to fill a critical gap in Germany’s arsenal, replacing its aging Gepard anti-aircraft tanks that were retired in 2010. The consortium chosen for the project, led by Rheinmetall, will develop a multi-layered air defense shield capable of protecting troops at both tactical and strategic levels.
The system will operate across two distinct ranges:
- Very short-range: This layer, responsible for defending against threats like small drones, will likely be based on Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30, a 30mm cannon mounted on the Boxer armored personnel carrier.
- Short-range: For targets beyond 3 kilometers, the system will utilize Diehl’s IRIS-T SLS air defense missile system.
This layered approach offers comprehensive protection against a variety of airborne threats, including drones, missiles, and low-flying aircraft. Importantly, the system will be designed to seamlessly integrate with Diehl’s IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense, already ordered by Germany, creating a robust and interconnected protective umbrella.
The project is expected to bear fruit by 2026 or 2027, with Hensoldt supplying the radars for the system. The decision to invest in this new technology reflects Germany’s commitment to modernizing its military and ensuring the safety of its troops in the face of evolving threats.
Skyranger 30: A Closer Look
Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 is a potent mobile air defense system already garnering significant interest from several European countries, including Hungary, Denmark, and Germany. Its central component is a powerful 30mm cannon, demonstrated to be effective even in challenging weather conditions.
The Skyranger 30’s flexibility allows for customization with different radars and effectors, catering to the specific needs of individual user nations. Its compact design makes it suitable for integration with various platforms, including both manned and unmanned vehicles. This versatility, coupled with its impressive firepower and mobility, positions the Skyranger 30 as a leading contender in the global market for short-range air defense solutions.
