USAF F-16 and C-17 to electrify Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow

The Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow, scheduled for Easter weekend, has secured a major coup with the confirmation of the United States Air Force participation. Both the iconic F-16 Fighting Falcon and the mighty C-17 Globemaster III demonstration teams will grace the skies above New Zealand, adding a thrilling international dimension to the event.

The F-16 team, hailing from Misawa Air Base in Japan, promises a “fast and furious” display showcasing the jet’s legendary maneuverability and speed. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the F-16’s legacy and continued production make its presence particularly noteworthy. This agile fighter, capable of reaching Mach 2, will surely enthrall audiences with its aerial acrobatics.

Equally impressive on the static and aerial display line will be the C-17 Globemaster III team from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. This behemoth cargo aircraft, renowned for its logistical prowess and ability to deliver outsized payloads, will undoubtedly captivate spectators with its sheer size and power.

Beyond the American contributions, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) is gearing up for an impressive showcase of its own. Taking center stage will be the New Zealand airshow debut of the P-8K Poseidon, the maritime surveillance successor to the P-3K Orion.

Adding a poignant touch will be the C-130H Hercules’ final major airshow display before retirement. This venerable workhorse, a mainstay of the RNZAF for decades, has served with distinction in diverse roles, from humanitarian missions to troop transport. Its farewell performance promises to be an emotional highlight.

The RNZAF’s Air Force Heritage Flight, featuring the legendary Spitfire, P-51 Mustang, and Grumman Avenger, will bridge the gap between historical warbirds and modern aviation. These timeless symbols of airpower will share the skies with the modern Texan T-6C trainers, also performing as the Black Falcons aerobatic team.

Furthermore, all three RNZAF helicopter types – the NH90, Iroquois, and A109 – will showcase their diverse capabilities, while the Kiwi Blue parachute team adds a touch of skydiving spectacle.

The combined participation of the US Air Force and the RNZAF in the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow promises an unparalleled aviation experience. From cutting-edge technology to historical warbirds and thrilling displays, the event caters to both aviation enthusiasts and the general public. With its diverse lineup and international flavor, this airshow is poised to be a resounding success, showcasing the power and history of military aviation across generations and borders.
