Saab has secured a significant contract to equip the German Air Force’s next-generation Eurofighter jets with its advanced Arexis Electronic Warfare (EW) sensor suite. This marks a major development in the ongoing partnership between Saab and Airbus, and a significant upgrade for Germany’s aerial defense capabilities.
The contract, spanning 2024-2026, will see Saab deliver Arexis systems for 15 of the German Air Force’s new Eurofighter EK variants, specifically designed for Electronic Warfare missions. These aircraft are slated to replace the aging Tornado ECR jets, which are scheduled for retirement by 2030.
Micael Johansson, CEO and President of Saab, emphasized the company’s experience in developing airborne EW systems and its long-standing collaboration with Airbus. He highlighted the Arexis suite’s capabilities, stating it will “strengthen the German defence with future-proof electronic warfare capability for decades to come.” This future-proofing is achieved through a combination of cutting-edge hardware and AI-powered software.
Saab will leverage its partnership with Helsing, a leading AI company, to integrate an AI platform into the Arexis suite. This integration will significantly enhance the system’s capabilities by enabling it to effectively detect, locate, and identify radar emitters within complex and congested electromagnetic environments.
The Arexis suite isn’t limited to the Eurofighter EK. Its modular design allows for adaptation to a wide range of modern combat aircraft platforms. This versatility ensures the technology can be integrated into future acquisitions, maximizing its value for the German Air Force.
