From orbit to anywhere: Sierra Space tests 90-Minute delivery system

Sierra Space has successfully completed initial beta testing of its Sierra Space Ghost program, a revolutionary space logistics system designed for rapid global resupply within 90 minutes.

Developed by Sierra Space’s Axelerator incubator program, the Ghost system features a deployable decelerator that protects a pre-staged payload during re-entry from orbit. This innovative approach aims to revolutionize the delivery of critical defense supplies by enabling hypersonic transport to any location on Earth.

Key Features and Potential Impact:

  • Rapid Global Delivery: The Ghost system boasts the capability to deliver payloads within 90 minutes of call-up, potentially altering the course of military operations by ensuring rapid resupply of critical resources.
  • On-Orbit Inventory and Precision Targeting: Pre-staged supplies in orbit, coupled with the system’s high-precision targeting capabilities, allow for the deployment of resources directly to frontline personnel within 100 meters of their designated location.
  • Extended On-Orbit Life and Pre-Loaded Supplies: The spacecraft offers a five-year on-orbit lifespan and comes equipped with pre-determined supplies, potentially including survival essentials and weaponry, depending on mission requirements.

Sierra Space conducted a series of successful drop tests at the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) in Florida on Feb. 1st. These initial tests focused on evaluating the system’s performance during the final descent phase (from approximately 5,000 ft) and involved three separate drops from a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter. The tests assessed the impact tolerance of the payload (terminal drop with no parachute), parachute deployment effectiveness, and separation of the heat shield component.

The Sierra Space Ghost program will now progress to a comprehensive beta testing phase. This phase will focus on developing the operational procedures and infrastructure required for real-world deployment. Testing will encompass communication systems, data management, and comprehensive recording of all operational aspects.

Overall, the successful beta testing of the Sierra Space Ghost represents a significant advancement in space logistics technology. This program holds the potential to transform military resupply efforts and national security strategies by enabling rapid, precise delivery of critical resources on a global scale.
