The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is revving up for its first-ever participation with aircraft in a major international exercise. Previously, the PAF’s involvement in Pitch Black was limited to observer roles. This year’s participation with fighter jets signifies a step up in its international engagement and reflects growing confidence in its air combat capabilities. The exercise provides a valuable platform for the PAF to hone its skills alongside air forces from other nations, fostering interoperability and furthering its tactical development.

While the Philippine contingent will be spearheaded by six FA-50s, a significant portion of the PAF’s operational fleet of these lightweight, multi-role fighters. The PAF has assured the public that deploying this contingent will not compromise the country’s airspace security.

A C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will provide logistical support, transporting personnel and equipment to Darwin, Australia, where the exercise will be held from Jul. 12 to Aug. 2.

This deployment comes amidst the backdrop of the Philippines’ growing focus on strengthening its air defense capabilities. The FA-50, with its advanced avionics and weapons capabilities, serves as a critical component of the PAF’s modernization efforts.
