Saab, the Swedish defense giant, has secured a contract to deliver its Mobile Short Range Air Defence (MSHORAD) system to Lithuania. This agreement, valued at approximately $123 million, signifies a significant boost for Lithuania’s air defense capabilities. Deliveries of the MSHORAD system are expected to occur between 2025 and 2027.
The contract builds upon a preexisting framework agreement established between Saab, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Lithuanian MoD. This framework allows Lithuania flexibility in future procurements of Saab’s RBS 70 NG short-range air defense missile solution.
The MSHORAD system encompasses several key components crucial for air defense operations. Mobile Firing Units will house the RBS 70 NG missiles, while Mobile Radar Units equipped with Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar will provide vital detection and tracking capabilities. A robust Command-and-Control (C2) system ensures seamless communication and coordination within the air defense network. Saab will also integrate the MSHORAD system onto Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) manufactured by Oshkosh Defense before delivery to Lithuania.
Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Laurynas Kasčiūnas emphasized the system’s advantages, particularly its mobility. Unlike traditional air defense systems, MSHORAD’s mobile configuration allows for rapid deployment and adaptation to evolving battlefield situations. Additionally, MSHORAD represents a significant upgrade from Lithuania’s existing RBS 70 air defense system, incorporating advanced radar, missile, and C2 technologies.
“MSHORAD is designed to ensure the protection of certain facilities, areas and critical infrastructure,” stated Minister Kasčiūnas. “The advantage of this system is mobility, so it is an extremely necessary system that will significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.”
