The new helicopter is part of a Low Rate Initial Production order awarded to Boeing in 2023. The company has already secured an additional order for seven MH-139As this year, bringing the total number of aircraft on contract to 26.

Designed to replace the aging UH-1N Huey, the MH-139A boasts a 50% increase in speed and range, along with a substantial boost in payload capacity. A key aspect of the Grey Wolf is its role in supporting the US nuclear triad. Boeing emphasizes the aircraft’s critical contribution to national security for decades to come. The rotorcraft’s enhanced capabilities will allow the U.S. Air Force to perform a wider range of missions while reducing operating costs and improving reliability.

The MH-139A is a collaborative effort between Boeing and Leonardo, with the latter responsible for the baseline helicopter production and Boeing overseeing military equipment integration and post-delivery support.
