U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School undergoes major transformation for Great Power Competition era

The U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (TPS) at Edwards Air Force Base, California, is implementing a comprehensive strategic plan to revolutionize its operations as it approaches its 80th anniversary. This transformation aims to better prepare Airmen and Guardians for the complex challenges of modern warfare in an era of Great Power Competition.

Maj. Gen. Scott Cain, commander of the Air Force Test Center, emphasized the school’s commitment to excellence, stating, “We are proud to carry on the tradition of excellence that Lt. Gen. Doolittle exemplified. Our goal is to prepare our graduates to be the test leaders of tomorrow, capable of leading multidisciplinary teams and advancing new capabilities for our warfighters.”

The strategic plan, inspired by the pioneering spirit of Lt. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle, focuses on three key areas: curriculum modernization, staff development, and expanded research capabilities. Col. James Valpiani, commandant of the Air Force Test Pilot School, elaborated on the mission: “We are committed to equipping our graduates with the mindset, knowledge, and skills necessary to lead in an era defined by rapid technological change and great power competition.”

Curriculum Overhaul

TPS is updating its programs to ensure graduates are proficient in emerging technologies critical to modern warfare. New courses in machine learning and data-driven control systems testing have been introduced, reflecting the military’s increasing reliance on big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The school is collaborating with leading industry and academic partners to familiarize students with cutting-edge technology and associated testing challenges.
In a significant development, TPS has launched its first year-long student cohort dedicated specifically to space testing, recognizing the growing importance of the space domain in military operations.

Enhanced Staff Development

To maintain its high standards of educational excellence, TPS has established a formal Test Instructor Course, leveraging nearly eight decades of flight test knowledge. The school has also implemented TPS Fellowships, allowing instructors to embed with teams at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and DARPA, broadening their understanding of the test profession.

Advanced Research Initiatives

The strategic plan places a strong emphasis on advancing test research, particularly in data-driven test applications. TPS is expanding its research capabilities, focusing on developing novel test techniques, frameworks, and tools to address pressing challenges in the test community. Interagency partnerships, academic research, and private industry collaborations are being strengthened to advance critical areas such as combat autonomy.
As TPS implements these changes, it remains committed to its core mission of producing test leaders capable of navigating the increasingly complex landscape of military testing and evaluation. The school’s transformation reflects the broader goals of the Air Force Test Center and the evolving needs of the U.S. military in the face of great power competition.

This strategic overhaul of the Air Force Test Pilot School represents a significant step forward in preparing the next generation of test pilots and engineers for the challenges of modern warfare. As the school adapts to the rapidly changing technological and strategic landscape, it continues to uphold its legacy of excellence while embracing innovation and forward-thinking approaches to military testing and evaluation.
