Reuters has reported that Swedish defence firm Saab has offered to sell Gripen fighter jets to Colombia. Saab CEO Micael Johansson confirmed the offer in an interview, stating that Colombia is evaluating the proposal. This follows an earlier report from Swedish public radio, which cited unnamed sources claiming that Colombia was poised to purchase Gripen jets. The specific number of aircraft offered by Saab remains undisclosed.
Johansson exuded confidence, stating that Saab had presented a comprehensive and competitive bid to the Colombian government, who are currently evaluating the proposal. He acknowledges the fierce competition in the military aviation market but remains optimistic about the Gripen’s prospects.
This strategic manoeuvre comes hot on the heels of Brazil’s decision to bolster its own Gripen fleet by a substantial 25%. This expansion of Brazil’s commitment to the Gripen platform underscores the aircraft’s growing popularity in the region. Saab, in partnership with Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer, has established a joint production line at Embraer’s Gaviao Peixoto plant in Sao Paulo. This facility, which commenced operations last year, represents a key element in Saab’s strategy to establish the Gripen as a dominant force in Latin America.
The Gaviao Peixoto plant, initially slated to produce 15 Gripens for Brazil, is poised to become a regional hub for Gripen production and export. Johansson sees Colombia and Peru as prime candidates for future Gripen sales, leveraging the strategic advantage of the Brazilian production base. He points out that Peru has publicly earmarked funds for the acquisition of fighter jets, signalling a concrete intent to modernise its air force. While the Colombian bid is currently further along in the process, Saab is actively vying for the Peruvian contract as well.
Should Colombia choose to embrace the Gripen, it would mark a significant leap forward for their air force capabilities. Such a deal would solidify Saab’s position as a major player in the South American defence market, demonstrating the Gripen’s appeal to nations seeking advanced, cost-effective fighter aircraft.
