Airbus has delivered the first A400M military transport to the Republic of Kazakhstan, marking a significant enhancement to the Central Asia nation’s air power projection capability.

Kazakhstan initiated its journey to acquire the A400M in September 2021 when it placed an order for two aircraft, becoming the ninth nation to operate the type. The agreement not only included the aircraft themselves but also a comprehensive package of maintenance and training support, ensuring the Kazakh Air Defense Forces can operate and maintain the A400M effectively. Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to facilitate collaboration on maintenance and overhaul services, with the initial step involving the establishment of a local C295 maintenance centre.
On Jun. 11, the first A400M destined for Kazakhstan, identified by the production number MSN139, embarked on its inaugural flight from Seville, Spain. This maiden flight, stretching over five hours, served as a critical testbed for the aircraft’s engines and systems, ensuring their optimal performance before delivery.
The culmination of this journey arrived on Dec. 10, with the official handover of the A400M to Kazakhstan at a ceremony held in Almaty. This event followed a ferry flight from Seville, the A400M’s final assembly line. Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space, underlined the A400M’s transformative impact, stating, “Proven for over a decade in military and humanitarian operations worldwide, the A400M is a game changer for the Kazakh Air Defense Forces, delivering unrivalled tactical and strategic capabilities in a single platform.”
The A400M’s arrival significantly bolsters Kazakhstan’s ability to execute a wide range of missions, spanning military operations, civil transport, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief. Its ability to rapidly deploy troops, equipment, and supplies across long distances and to remote areas is particularly valuable. A second A400M, currently under production, is anticipated to be delivered to Kazakhstan in 2026, further solidifying the nation’s airlift capacity.
The A400M boasts a proven operational history, having participated in numerous military and humanitarian missions globally. Notably, it has played a critical role in the evacuation of civilian and military personnel from Afghanistan, Sudan, and Niger, showcasing its ability to operate in challenging environments and provide vital support during crises.
