The Italian Army has committed to acquiring the Rheinmetall Skynex system. The initial contract, a €73 million deal, is for a single system, but it includes an option for three more, potentially ballooning the total to nearly €280 million. This order makes Italy the first NATO member to adopt Rheinmetall’s Skynex technology, notably including the 35mm Revolver Gun Mk3
The Skynex system is no mere point defence platform; it’s designed as a multi-layered, integrated system to deal with a range of threats: missiles, artillery, mortars, drones, and those pesky loitering munitions. It’s a layered approach, combining a sensor and tracking unit, a command-and-control centre, and those four hard-hitting 35mm firing units. The 35mm Revolver Gun Mk3 is no slouch; it can spit out 1,000 rounds per minute, with a range of up to 4 kilometres. Crucially, it uses programmable Ahead ammunition, designed to be resistant to electronic countermeasures, ensuring precision hits on the target.
It is designed for that close-in, last-ditch defence where traditional guided missiles might not be the most cost-effective, or even the most effective, option. It’s proving its mettle in Ukraine, where it’s reportedly been successful against cruise missiles and drones. The system is designed around modularity, allowing it to integrate with existing air defence systems. The Italian configuration includes the Rheinmetall XTAR 3D radar, capable of monitoring the airspace within a 50 km radius. This modularity allows for a tailored defence system, adaptable to different operational needs.
