The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) recently marked its 88th anniversary with grand celebrations at the Air Force Base in Don Muang on Mar. 7-8. The theme of the airshow, “AIR SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH UNBEATABLE COLLABORATION,” underscored the RTAF’s commitment to national security through strong partnerships with various nations.
The anniversary events featured a diverse range of activities, including a dynamic air show, a static display of aircraft, insightful exhibitions, and a seminar. Personnel from various armed forces, government and private sector organizations, and the public attended the celebrations.
The aerial demonstration was a major highlight, showcasing impressive performances such as the F-16 Lightning and Shark Gripen demostration teams from RTAF. Spectators were also thrilled by the August 1st Aerobatic Display Team from China and the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team from India. A “Hot Scramble” demonstration and an F-35A aerobatic demonstration from the United States Air Force added to the excitement.
The static display of aircraft included a variety of models from Thailand, such as the F-16A, EC725 helicopter, and T-50TH advanced jet trainer. Aircraft from foreign countries were also prominently featured, including the J-10 from China; Indian Air Force’s Hawk Mk132; F-16D, F-15SG, A330 MRTT from Singapore; F-35A and KC-135 from the United States.
A significant moment of the event was the visit of His Majesty the King Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty the Queen Suthida of Thailand, who attended the airshow dressed in pilot outfits. They observed the flying display, including the “Formation Display with National Colors Smoke”. Their Majesties also visited exhibitions that highlighted the Gripen aircraft landing on a road in Songkhla province and showcased the King’s remarkable background as a pilot. His Majesty’s qualifications include training and over 2,800 hours of flight time, as well as his service as a flight instructor for the RTAF.
Looking to the future, the RTAF has outlined ambitious development plans. These include replacing current fighter jets with new ones, acquiring air-to-air refueling aircraft, and getting armed unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as enhancing medium and long-range air space protection by procuring an integrated air defense system. The RTAF is also focused on disaster relief efforts and developing its space capabilities, including acquiring low-orbit satellites. Cooperation with nations and the promotion of domestic aviation and defense industries remain key priorities for Thailand Armed Forces’ flying branch.
In conclusion, the RTAF’s 88th-anniversary celebrations highlighted its unwavering commitment to national security, strong collaboration, and support for the Thai people. With roots tracing back to 1913, when three Thai officers returned from flight training in Europe , the RTAF has a rich history of aviation excellence. From its beginnings as an Aviation Unit in the Siamese Army to its establishment as a separate and independent branch on Apr. 9, 1937, the RTAF has evolved into a modern force. Renamed the Royal Thai Air Force in 1939, it is dedicated to maintaining regional stability and ensuring the well-being of the Thai people. With a focus on continued development and modernization, the Royal Thai Air Force is ready to face future challenges and opportunities.
