The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk – FMV) has signed a contract with Thales for the delivery of Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact radar systems (GM200 MM/C). The agreement, valued at approximately one billion Swedish kronor, was finalized on Apr. 3.
This acquisition represents the first contract under FMV’s medium-range radar procurement initiative and is part of Sweden’s broader sensor system modernization program known as “Sensorsystem Ny.” The new radar systems will replace the Swedish Armed Forces’ aging PS-871 systems that are approaching the end of their operational life.
According to FMV, the first deliveries of the GM200 MM/C radar systems are scheduled for 2026, with continuing deliveries to the Swedish Armed Forces to follow. The procurement timeline was a critical factor in the selection process, with FMV emphasizing the need to deliver this capability to the Swedish Armed Forces as quickly as possible.
The GM200 MM/C medium-range radar utilizes the latest generation 4D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, which provides enhanced tracking capabilities across a wide spectrum of threats. Its compact design offers increased mission flexibility through improved mobility and shortened deployment times.
“The midsized-range systems will contribute to strengthened air and maritime situational awareness. They also provide increased mobility capability since they are fundamentally mobile, which means radar coverage can be reinforced in priority areas more quickly,” said Per Schylström, project manager for medium-range radar at FMV.
Supply security was another important consideration in the procurement process. FMV noted the need to spread risks regarding delivery capabilities while meeting the requirement for high overall production capacity.
With this selection, Sweden becomes the fifth NATO country to choose the GM200 MM/C radar system. The procurement is connected to a previously established Letter of Intent between Sweden and the Netherlands, which covers information exchange, exploration of opportunities to harmonize technical requirements and contract terms for future procurements, maintenance agreements, system development, and potential industrial cooperation.
“We are very proud to be selected by FMV to further strengthen Swedish sovereign and defence capabilities in an increasingly challenging environment. The Thales GM200 MM/C, with its high-end technology, will play a vital role contributing to the overall national security,” said Håkan Ahlström, Country Director Sweden at Thales.
