Korean Air and L3Harris propose advanced AEW&C solution for ROKAF

Korean Air and L3Harris Technologies have unveiled a collaborative proposal for the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (ROKAF) next-generation Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, according to reports from local media outlets. The proposal was presented during the “L3 Industry Day” event held at the Air Force Hotel in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul on Aug. 13.

The proposed solution centers on the Bombardier Global 6500 business jet, integrated with advanced radar systems from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). This platform aims to complement ROKAF’s existing fleet of four Boeing E-737 Peace Eye AEW&C aircraft, as part of a $2.13 billion project to enhance South Korea’s aerial surveillance capabilities by 2031.

L3Harris’s offering represents a departure from the larger Boeing 737-based platform currently in service. The Global 6500, with its extended range and advanced avionics, could potentially offer increased mission flexibility and reduced operating costs.

Under a 2022 cooperation agreement, Korean Air is slated to play a significant role in the project if L3Harris’s bid is successful. The South Korean flag carrier would contribute to aircraft modification, parts manufacturing, and operational training, leveraging its extensive experience in aerospace engineering and maintenance.

Park Jung-woo, senior vice president of Korean Air’s aerospace business division, stated, “This strategic collaboration will enable Korean Air to acquire and develop cutting-edge technologies in the modification, systems integration, and comprehensive maintenance of advanced special mission aircraft.”

The project is expected to provide substantial opportunities for technology transfer and integration into global supply chains for South Korea’s domestic defense industry. This aligns with the country’s broader strategy to enhance its indigenous defense capabilities and position itself as a key player in the international aerospace market.
