BAE Systems upgrades F-15EX and F/A-18E/F Flight Control Computers

BAE Systems has been selected by Boeing to upgrade the fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control computers (FCC) for the F-15EX Eagle II and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter aircraft. As the original manufacturer of the FCCs for both aircraft, BAE Systems will modernize the hardware and software. This will increase processing power, address obsolescence, and improve cyber and product security. The upgrades will ensure the sustained performance and capabilities of these advanced platforms well into the future.

The upgraded FCC will leverage BAE Systems’ high-integrity flight control product roadmap. This roadmap is built upon the company’s extensive technology investments. It has been utilized across multiple recent military airborne platform flight control upgrades. For the F/A-18E/F, the FCC will also receive an additional processor. This will enable future capabilities for the fleet.

The FCCs play a crucial role in efficiently managing aircraft flight. They process pilot inputs, monitor real-time aircraft movement conditions, and transmit commands to actuators. The redundant flight control system and flight control laws enable the pilot to maintain controlled operation. The flight control system can also reconfigure how it controls the aircraft in case of a failure or battle damage. This allows the pilot to focus more on the mission and less on flying the aircraft.
