Saab has secured a second order from Lithuania for its Mobile Short-Range Air Defence (MSHORAD) system, strengthening the Baltic nation’s air defence capabilities. The order, valued at $116 million, follows an initial agreement signed in July 2024.
The latest acquisition will provide the Lithuanian Armed Forces with a second battery of the advanced MSHORAD system. Deliveries are expected to take place between 2026 and 2029.
“We are proud to continue supporting the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ short-range air defence capability. MSHORAD is a highly mobile solution which enables the user to quickly and effectively identify and counteract air threats,” said Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.
The July order, valued at approximately $126 million, marked a significant step in Lithuania’s defence modernisation programme. The initial agreement included Mobile Firing Units, Mobile Radar Units, a Command- and Control (C2) System, a training package, and the RBS 70 NG trainer.
Lithuanian Minister of National Defence, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, emphasised the system’s importance, stating, “MSHORAD is designed to ensure the protection of certain facilities, areas and critical infrastructure. The advantage of this system is mobility, so it is an extremely necessary system that will significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. We are currently using the older generation RBS 70 air defence system and Bolide missiles.”
This second order reinforces Lithuania’s commitment to bolstering its defence posture in the face of evolving security concerns. The MSHORAD system, renowned for its mobility and rapid deployment capability, will significantly enhance Lithuania’s ability to counter aerial threats.
Commenting on the latest agreement, Minister Kasčiūnas said, “The acquisition of the Mobile Short-Range Air Defense System (MSHORAD) will enhance the Lithuanian military’s capability to counter potential enemy air attacks. The advantage of this system is its mobility, making it a highly necessary system for Lithuania.”
The MSHORAD system is built around Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar, the RBS 70 NG Mobile Firing Unit, and the GBAD C2 command and control system. This integrated system is designed to provide superior situational awareness and swift response capabilities.
