On Oct. 22nd, the first of Bulgaria’s F-16 Block 70 fighter jets successfully completed its inaugural flight at Lockheed Martin’s production facility in Greenville, South Carolina. This marks a significant milestone for the Bulgarian Air Force as it modernises its fleet with 16 of these advanced aircraft. OJ Sanchez, vice president and general manager of the Integrated Fighter Group at Lockheed Martin, highlighted the importance of this event, stating, “With the F-16 Block 70, the Bulgarian Air Force will be well-equipped to secure its borders and partner with U.S, European and NATO allies.”

Bulgaria’s decision to acquire the F-16 Block 70 stems from its commitment to strengthening its commitment to NATO and bolstering its defence capabilities. The initial purchase agreement for eight jets was signed in 2019, followed by a second agreement for an additional eight jets in 2022. The second batch, consisting of four F-16C Block 70 aircraft and four F-16D Block 70 aircraft, along with associated munitions and equipment, was procured in October 2022.
During the flight, test pilot Charles “Seeker” Hoang conducted multiple system tests to validate the aircraft’s performance and supersonic capabilities.
Bulgaria joins a select group of nations as the second European country to receive the F-16 Block 70. This cutting-edge fighter jet is currently operated by 27 countries worldwide, with six countries choosing the Block 70/72 version for their fleets. This acquisition underscores the F-16’s enduring relevance in modern air forces and its role in maintaining international security cooperation.
