Japan to test infrared sensor for ballistic missile warning satellite

Japan is planning to put an experimental infrared sensor on board the ALOS-3 satellite that it plans to launch into space orbit next year.

The sensor will be use to detect launches of ballistic missiles, it is unique by having the ability to sense in dual bands.

Japan plans to gather data collected by the sensor to build its own database for a potential space-base ballistic missile warning system.
