Taiwan achieves major breakthrough in VLS technology

Taiwan has achieved a major breakthrough in developing its own Vertical Launching System (VLS) for arming naval warships.

According to Up Media, the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has been researching on its Hua Yang system during the last decade. The system was ready in 2014, however, the Navy decided against using the system as NCSIST failed to impress the service on its VLS’ ability to manage exhaust gas and suppress fires.

Without an indigenous solution, Taiwan’s navy decided to import the American Mk 41 VLS. During the transfer of technology, NCSIST overcame the limitations of its own VLS by studying the Mk 41.

The revamped Hua Yang VLS was tested successfully last year with an indigenous AESA radar. With the success, the service has decided to use the Hua Yang VLS with the TC-2N anti-air missile. This air defense missile system will be installed on future ships.
