New software for the SPY-7 radar that will eventually be fitted on Japan’s afloat Aegis System-Equipped Vessel (ASEV) was successfully demonstrated on Aug. 26.
Representatives from Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and U.S. Navy Aegis Technical Representative (TECHREP) witnessed a successful Mid-Release 2 Demonstration in Moorestown, New Jersey. The software release for the Japanese J7.B Aegis Weapon System will allow Japan to have a ballistic missile defense (BMD) using the ASEV.
During the demonstration, Aegis Baseline J7.B with SPY-7 proved its ability to engage ballistic missiles using the SM-3 Block IIA interceptor.
Aegis Baseline J7.B successfully implemented critical fire-control functions, including missile acquisition, guidance commands, and two-way missile communications, simultaneously with SPY-7 radar operations.
J7.B with the SPY-7 showed that it has the capability to properly search and track very large raids of BMD threats.
