WC-135 flew off Chinese coast, probably to monitor nuclear power plants

A U.S. Air Force WC-135 approached the southern coast of China on Oct. 31 shortly before 8 a.m. local time.

While the purpose of the flight is unknown, the mission could be to monitor the Chinese nuclear power plants near the coast.

Earlier this year, French company Framatome disclosed that the Chinese nuclear safety regulator had raised limits on permissible levels of radiation outside the Taishan nuclear power station to avoid shutting down the site.

China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment later said that there was an increase in radiation levels in the primary circuit of the number one reactor but it was within limits.
