Former PACAF commander Gen. Gary L. North achieved the kill while flying F-16D #0778 over Iraq. A MiG-25 had entered the no-fly zone and North fired an AIM-120 missile at it. It was also the combat debut of the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile.

According to the 56th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, a desert camouflage scheme was being tested during their period but was removed after one week.
