In a major boost to India’s self-reliance campaign, the government has approved the purchase of 70 locally made basic trainer aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a cost of $838 million.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will supply the HTT40 light trainers over a period of six years. The aircraft will have sixty percent of its components made locally eventually. The defense ministry estimates that the order will generate 1,500 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs across 100 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.
