Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) have commenced midlife upgrade (MLU) studies for the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. The A-29, currently utilized by the FAB for training, air interception, and surveillance missions, as well as by the renowned Air Demonstration Squadron (EDA), known as the “Smoke Squadron,” will undergo enhancements to meet evolving requirements.

The upgrade encompasses a variety of enhancements that can significantly benefit the FAB. These include a fifth-generation avionics system with expansion capacity, upgraded navigation and communication systems, expanded weapons systems, and improved surveillance and self-protection sensors. Additionally, the upgrades will provide increased situational awareness through improved human-machine interface.
President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, Bosco da Costa Junior, highlights that the Brazilian Air Force will benefit from a comprehensive range of updates implemented throughout the aircraft’s lifespan. These updates have ensured that the A-29 remains technologically advanced while maintaining low operating costs. Embraer stands ready to develop and implement new functionalities should the FAB identify additional needs.
Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, Brazilian Air Force Commander, underscores the A-29’s exceptional performance since its induction. The proposed midlife upgrade will not only maintain a modern platform but also expand the aircraft’s operational capabilities for the foreseeable future.
Presently, the Brazilian Air Force operates a fleet of 60 A-29 aircraft across five squadrons, accumulating over 325,000 flight hours. The A-29’s reliability and performance have led to its selection by more than 15 air forces worldwide, including the United States Air Force (USAF).
