In a historic move for both Romania and NATO nations, the Minister of National Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, alongside the Netherlands’ Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren, officially opened the European F-16 Training Center at the 86 Fetesti Air Base on Nov. 13. This center, the first of its kind in Europe, marks a significant step in enhancing Romanian-Dutch cooperation and extending allied support to Ukraine.

The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of ambassadors from Denmark, the Netherlands, the United States, and Ukraine, underlining the international importance of the event. Lockheed Martin, the American aerospace company, was also represented, signifying the collaborative efforts between nations and the private sector.
The F-16 Training Center is a crucial development for Romania, enabling the training of pilots for the operation of F-16 aircraft recently acquired from Norway. These advanced aircraft are slated for integration into the Romanian Air Force. Romania had acquired 32 F-16 fighter aircraft from Norway in 2021 under the Peace Carpathian III program.
Minister Tîlvăr emphasized the broader significance of the center, stating, “The European F-16 Training Center will play a vital role in preparing Romanian pilots for operating these high-performance aircraft.” He added that the initiative aims not only to train a significant number of pilots but also to enhance the qualifications of those already operating F-16s in Romania.
What makes this project even more noteworthy is its dedication to supporting Ukraine. Minister Tîlvăr mentioned Romania’s participation in establishing the International F-16 Coalition, a testament to the commitment to align efforts with allies and regional partners, especially in supporting Ukraine. During a bilateral meeting with his Dutch counterpart, both ministers had discussions that ranged from political-military and security developments to the current situation in the Black Sea Region and the Middle East. Both nations expressed commitment to strengthening defense cooperation, with a focus on regional security and supporting partners in the area.
The international hub is set to expedite the training of not only Romanian but also Ukrainian pilots. The collaborative effort between Romania, the Netherlands, and Lockheed Martin is lauded for turning a complex project into reality in record time.
