In a strategic move to reinforce its response capabilities against potential military threats from North Korea, South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced the signing of a contract with the U.S. government for the purchase of 20 additional F-35A stealth fighter jets. The agreement, finalized on Dec. 8, comes after Washington’s approval of the sale in September.

The South Korean Air Force, currently equipped with 39 F-35A fighters following a previous procurement of 40 units from 2019 to 2022, is set to enhance its aerial capabilities with the addition of these advanced fighter jets. The decision to acquire more F-35As is a testament to South Korea’s commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture amid evolving regional security challenges.
Scheduled for delivery starting in 2027, the newly purchased F-35A stealth fighter jets are expected to feature enhanced capabilities and features in Block 4 configuration.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration emphasized that the latest acquisition will play a crucial role in strengthening South Korea’s “three-axis” defense system. This comprehensive defense strategy includes the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation plan, designed to incapacitate the North Korean leadership in a major conflict; the Kill Chain pre-emptive strike platform; and the Korea Air and Missile Defense system.
