Lithuania has taken a significant step towards strengthening its air defense capabilities with the acquisition of Thales Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact (GM200 MM/C) radars. This collaboration, built on strong NATO cooperation and bilateral ties with the Netherlands, signifies a renewed commitment to regional security in the face of evolving threats.

The GM200 MM/C radar system is designed to meet the challenges of modern warfare, offering highly accurate detection, tracking, and classification of all current and future threats, including drones. Its cutting-edge 4D AESA technology provides radar operators with more time to gather crucial information on incoming threats, significantly improving reaction times and decision-making.
Beyond drone detection, the system boasts the ability to identify and track a wide range of aerial targets, including aircraft, missiles, helicopters, and multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). It also excels in weapon location and air defense, playing a vital role in protecting valuable assets and personnel.
Cybersecurity is an integral part of the GM200 MM/C, thanks to its secure design and software-defined radar technology. This allows for future upgrades and capability enhancements, ensuring the system remains effective against ever-evolving threats and adapting doctrines.
Furthermore, the compact and mobile design of the GM200 MM/C offers unparalleled flexibility. It can be easily deployed in various configurations, from fixed locations to high-mobility scenarios, minimizing deployment time and facilitating transportation on any platform. This versatility enhances operational adaptability and rapid response capabilities.
Lithuanian partner ELSIS will collaborate with Thales on the vehicle integration aspects of the solution, strengthening cooperation and knowledge transfer within the project.
“This acquisition marks a significant step forward in bolstering our artillery capabilities and overall air defense posture,” emphasized Mr. Sigitas Dzekunskas, Director of Defence Materiel Agency under the Ministry of National Defence of Republic of Lithuania. “Additionally, the joint procurement with the Netherlands strengthens our collaboration with NATO allies in critical areas like acquisition and support.”
