This event marked the first time a new Air Force weapons system, the F-15EX, has been delivered to the Air National Guard before the active-duty Air Force. This signifies the growing importance of the National Guard in national defense strategies.

Dignitaries, officials, and aviation enthusiasts were treated to a close-up look at the F-15EX, destined to replace the existing F-15C Eagle models operated by the 142nd Wing. A total of 18 F-15EXs will be delivered to the unit, forming part of a larger national rollout of nearly 100 of these advanced fighter jets.

Manufactured by Boeing, the F-15EX boasts next-generation radars, sensors, and software designed to counter evolving threats. This modernized platform ensures the 142nd Wing remains on the cutting edge of air defense capabilities.

Col. Michael Kosderka, 142nd Wing commander, expressed his pride in representing the unit and the Oregon National Guard, “the home of the newest fighter.”

Following opening remarks, Brig. Gen. Alan Gronewold, The Adjutant General for the Oregon National Guard, emphasized the importance of the F-15EX for Oregon and the nation. He highlighted the enhanced operational readiness and effectiveness the new aircraft brings, along with seamless integration with active-duty units and greater interoperability within the Air Force.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek echoed these sentiments, recognizing the vital role of the 142nd Wing as the sole defender of Pacific Northwest skies. She emphasized how the F-15EX’s advanced capabilities will strengthen regional and national homeland defense.

Senator Ron Wyden recounted the hard-fought battle to preserve the 142nd Wing in 2005, showcasing the community’s unwavering support for the unit.

Maj. Gen. Duke Pirak, Acting Director of the Air National Guard and former 142nd Wing commander, spoke of the profound moment this represents in the Oregon Air National Guard’s history. He emphasized the national significance of the F-15EX, calling it “the cornerstone of our nation’s airpower.”

Pirak concluded by commending the 142nd Wing for its past achievements and future potential. He challenged the Airmen to “never stop striving for excellence and never stop challenging yourself to continually earn this mark of indispensability.”
