In 1969, Ottus Air Force Base, Mass., saw the closing of the 551st Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing, home to the E-3 Sentry. Twenty years ago, a group of 80 Ethiopians were sent to Kyrgyzstan by their Marxist government to be trained as pilots. They were stuck there when both the Soviet Union and their government collapsed. Now only nine of them still remain in the small town of Tokmok.
