ARABIAN GULF (Jan. 16, 2019) From left to right, France’s Marine Nationale air defense destroyer FS Cassard (D 614), the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111), the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Ballarat (FFH 155) and the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) sail in formation in the in the Arabian Gulf, Jan. 16, 2019, during exercise Intrepid Sentinel. Intrepid Sentinel brings together the John C. Stennis Strike Group, France’s Marine Nationale, United Kingdom’s Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy for a multinational exercise designed to enhance war fighting readiness and interoperability between allies and partners. The John C. Stennis Strike Group is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points. USS Gerald R. Ford accepts first Advanced Weapons Elevator

The U.S. Navy has accepted USS Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN 78) first Advanced Weapons Elevator (AWE) on Dec. 21.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Jan. 16, 2019) Chief Machinist’s Mate Franklin Pollydore, second from left, from Georgetown, Guyana, goes over safety procedures for the Upper Stage 1 advanced weapons elevator with Sailors from USS Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN 78) weapons department. The elevator is the first to be delivered to the ship and marks a major milestone for Ford and the entire Ford-class of aircraft carriers. Ford is currently undergoing its post-shakedown availability at Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding. Spanish navy frigate ESPS Méndez Núñez arrived in Norfolk on Jan. 14 and the warship will soon join the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (CSG) for Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).
